How to create the ultimate home learning zone for your child!

Updated: Dec 3, 2020

The schools closed their doors in March, but the learning didn’t stop there. The classroom is no longer at school. The classroom is now your home. In your conservatory. Your home office. Your living room. Your child’s bedroom. Not always the best place to learn, but today we will examine what we can do to turn an ordinary place in your home to the ultimate home learning zone for your child!

Find a comfortable place to sit

The sofa isn’t the greatest place to study. A desk & study table would be perfect, but the dining table would also suffice. Make sure the chair with good back support, as they may be sitting there for some time!

Invest in some ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones

Sounds in the background can be really distracting sometimes. The washing machine. The vacuum cleaner. Traffic. Kids playing outside. Birds tweeting away in the background. A good set of ear plugs can help to eliminate those noises, and noise cancelling headphones will mean you only hear the sounds you want.

Study in a well lit area

A dark and gloomy environment can make learning difficult, but great lighting can make all the difference. Light and airy surroundings can help improve concentration, reduce fatigue and give an energy boost.

Keep an eye on the time & schedule in regular breaks

Split your learning activities into smaller Bitesize chunks with set start and end times. Having a clock nearby and having activities split up in an organised manner will help your child feel like they are at school and make the most of their day.

Switch on content filters and parental monitoring

Our children are spending more and more time online, and as parents we should take steps to protect them. Switch on the content filters and controls to help ensure their safety.

Have everything you’ll need in arms reach

Before we start learning, try to ensure that they have all the equipment they will need, including any books or stationary. When we finish, make sure everything gets put away in its rightful place.

Dress to impress

Have your children put on their uniforms while they are in our home classroom. This again will help your child feel like they are at school and make the most of their day as well as fill them with pride and put them in the right mindset.

Following these tips will help turn your study area into the ultimate home learning zone and help improve productivity and learning efficiency and reduce distractions. In September, once the children have returned to school, having a zone optimised for learning at will really help with homework and revision. Try to keep it available if you can, you might even find it a useful place to use yourself!
